It&#8217;s a strategic powerhouse. Historically there have been three business drivers corporate alumni programs support:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Business Development<\/b> &#8211; Turning former employees into clients\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><b>Boomerang Rehires<\/b> &#8211; Welcoming back ex-employees who return\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><b>Brand Ambassadors<\/b> &#8211; Alumni who speak highly of their former employer\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While business development has consistently ranked as the top driver, talent acquisition is a very close second. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/peoplepath.com\/blog\/the-2025-corporate-alumni-benchmarking-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PeoplePath research<\/a>, 8% of new hires on average are rehires. When companies invest in their offboarding process, this number can be upwards of 25-30% saving millions in recruitment costs. Also, newly reported in 2025, 34% of companies are tracking regrettable losses &#8211; those who voluntarily leave a company who might have been considered a top performer.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We know why people leave their jobs &#8211; poor managers, no upward mobility, a lack of salary or benefit improvements, new experiences, etc. But why do they return? \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Boomerangs Are Back-and Breaking Records<\/h2>\n<p>According to recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpresearch.com\/boomerang-hiring-makes-a-comeback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADP Research<\/a> that looks across various industries, boomerang employees made up 35% of new hires in 2025 &#8211; the highest percentage since they started tracking in 2018, and an increasing trend in recent years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peoplepath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-11-19-100538-3.png\" alt=\"Screenshot 2025-11-19 100538\" height=\"1415\" width=\"2155\" title=\"Screenshot 2025-11-19 100538\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peoplepath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-11-19-102727-3.png\" alt=\"Screenshot 2025-11-19 102727\" height=\"1500\" width=\"2487\" title=\"Screenshot 2025-11-19 102727\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Why and When Do Former Employees Return?<\/h2>\n<p>There are a variety of reasons why a former employee will return to their previous employer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The new culture isn&#8217;t a fit<\/li>\n<li>The new role wasn&#8217;t as promised<\/li>\n<li>They miss their old team and\/or resources<\/li>\n<li>A senior role is available<\/li>\n<li>Increased salary \/ benefits \/ title<\/li>\n<li>Stability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2023\/03\/the-promise-and-risk-of-boomerang-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard Business Review<\/a> article finds that the average time for rehiring former employees is 13 months. A forward-thinking corporate alumni program should work this timeline into their communications by adding in a check-in around month eight or nine to gauge the likelihood of that person returning.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Do Companies Rehire Staff?<\/h2>\n<p>Similarly to the above, there are a variety of reasons why this is a strategic tool:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Cultural Fit<\/strong> &#8211; Alumni already know the ropes. Returning talent hit the ground running, making onboarding faster and more effective.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fresh Perspective<\/strong> &#8211; They bring new skills, insights, and sometimes even clients from their time away.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cost Savings<\/strong> &#8211; Recruiting is expensive. A company can save on the cost per hire, as well as decreased training time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Compared to other employees, boomerangs are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1% more satisfied<\/li>\n<li>8% more committed to the organization<\/li>\n<li>6% devote more hours on extra-role behaviors than stayers on average<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Boomerang hiring isn&#8217;t just a trend &#8211; it&#8217;s a testament to the power of relationships, culture, and keeping the door open in a way that&#8217;s mutually beneficial.
